Artificial Intelligence

Once again, the technology industry is going through a period of important changes, which will -once again- not only change the industry, but probably society and perhaps even the entire humanity. The generative artificial intelligence technology, developed by OpenAI, is rapidly changing the tech industry, particularly the IT Services industry, since it is changing the landscape of software solutions that are commonly used at all levels.

However, as it usually happens, as Gartner defines as the Hype Cycle, the adoption of new technologies -and this one is not likely to be an exception- usually follows a cycle, that starts with a euphoric initial phase, then slows down with expectations and finally follows a slower but steady/sustainable phase of adoption. Nearly all innovative/disruptive technologies end up being largely adopted in a period of between two and ten years. In ten years from now, it is estimated that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) can be achieved, i.e. the moment in which AI may match or surpass human intelligence, which is more or less what was already expected, around the year 2035.

But we believe that there is another, at least as important factor, that can determine the future even more, not only of technology, but of the development of society: geopolitics. The use of technology as a weapon to destabilize and manipulate society could increase even more as technology evolves, with AI being a powerful tool, a dangerous weapon to do so.

Therefore regulation, surveillance and control of all tools and contents at all levels and instances, as well as education and awareness on a general basis in society will be key to avoid being an easy target of manipulation.

But what will remain unchanged is the need of companies -especially in the tech industry- to permanently and rapidly adapt to the constant changes, which can be achieved by an intelligent strategy, that should always include mergers and acquisitions. At Stelvio we maintain a close tracing of the tech industry and can therefore provide a highly specialized advice.
